FASHBASH: THE LONG STORY – SHORT
FashBash put upmarket fashion bazaars in vogue: The first of its kind, FashBash on 6 May 2006 drew unprecedented interest from vendors, customers and the media. Covered in The Straits Times, Business Times, Today, Female, and I-S, the inaugural event drew more than 2,000 visitors. At FashBash, designer-loving shopaholics got to decoct their hoard by selling items they no longer use or want — to make room for new buys! — while fashionistas could pick up authentic, new or good-as-new luxury goods at discounted prices.
We also believe that local talent deserves no less support: We’re proud to say our first event had participating fashion labels like Baylene, Tskye, Swirl and Tan Tan, as well as jewellery designers including PInc, Summer Fly, and Black Ivory. Shoppers simply snapped up their stuff! Because of all the love, many of these local designers responded enthusiastically and the seller base grew from event to event organised with new partners and at new venues.
After a short hiatus of just a couple of years, FashBash returns in 2018 with The Comeback Edition.
FASHBASH: THE SHORT STORY – LONG
FashBash pioneered the luxury fashion bazaar concept in Singapore in 2006. First conceived by two shopaholic friends to provide a platform for gals (and guys!) to sell their pre-loved designer goods, which flea markets that were around at that time provided hardly the right environment for moving these expensive items.
Grace Tay and Le-Anne Lim met [when Grace bought a Zac Posen bolero from Le-Anne] as neighbours at second-hand wares at a flea market along River Valley Road. Le-Anne mooted the idea of organising a bazaar that concentrated on more upmarket and fashionable merchandise, they got cracking, and the first Fashbash took off with a bang at Ink Bar at Raffles The Plaza on 6 May 2006.
Fashionistas loved the idea of clearing their wardrobes of their pre-loved clothes, bags, shoes and accessories – only authentic designer labels please! Very quickly, local designers and retailers jumped on board to clear samples, past season well as current stock at the bazaar.
The concept was cool and fresh, we got great pre-event press with the fashion magazines, papers and bloggers, and response from shoppers and vendors alike was incredible. Our vendors were very pleased to inform us that they hit sales figures they had never seen before in their own stores on a weekend, and definitely not at any other flea market they had participated in.
Many designers and retailers including Baylene, Irregular Choice, Dustbunny Vintage and WoonHung, quickly became regulars, along with several fashion magazine editors and friends who wanted to clear their designer items. Shoppers also appreciated how we curated the participants, and how we invested in a professional set-up, with spacious changing rooms, credit card and NETs payment options, swagbags for early birds and lucky draw with good prizes.
With new partners and Elves, FashBash quickly moved to bigger locations to accommodate more stalls and shoppers and was organised several times a year. Locations have included Curiocity (an art gallery at NAFA), Singapore Art Museum (SAM), the atrium at The Cathay, and the atrium at Orchard Central.
The FashBash family of events also expanded to FashBash’s “very flea” little sister, Wardrobe Raids, which was a non-designer flea market and car-boot sale that had 120+ stalls at St James Powerhouse — and an insane turnout of shoppers. We also created FashBash Quickshop, hosting online flash sales for selected brand partners, and CityPatrol for event and fashion/lifestyle musings. Both are on indefinite hiatus. Because lazy.
